Word-level highlights

Files travel over HTTPS, are used only to produce your diff and are deleted within 24 hours.

No Word needed

Works in any browser – nobody involved needs Microsoft Word installed or a license.

How it works

1

Upload both versions

The original DOCX and the edited one, up to 50 MB each.

2

Content is aligned

The text of both documents is extracted and aligned paragraph by paragraph, ignoring formatting-only noise.

3

Review the changes

Added text shows green, removed text red, and edited sentences mark the exact words that changed. Unchanged runs collapse.

Track Changes only shows the edits someone chose to track

Every contract negotiation has that moment: a counterparty returns "the same document with your comments accepted", and the only honest answer is to verify. Word's own compare hides behind a license and a desktop app, and Track Changes is voluntary – one edit made with it off, and the record is incomplete. Comparing the two files directly removes the trust problem: whatever differs between the versions is highlighted, tracked or not.

The alignment is structural, so a paragraph moved two pages down does not light up the whole document – it stays matched, and only genuine wording changes are flagged. Inside an edited sentence the specific words are marked, which is how a 30 became a 45 in a payment term gets caught at a glance.

Part of a bigger review loop

Mechanical comparison answers "what changed"; judgment answers "does it matter". For agreements, run the changed version through Contract Analysis to surface risks and obligations, and see how to compare contract versions for a reviewer's checklist. PDFs compare the same way at Compare PDF, and the comparison hub maps every case to its tool.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two Word documents?

+

Upload both DOCX files above and press Compare. Every addition, removal and edit between the versions is highlighted side by side – no Word installation, no Track Changes required.

How to compare two Word documents when Track Changes was never on?

+

That is the main use case here. Track Changes only records edits people remembered to track; this comparison reconstructs the difference from the documents themselves, so nothing edited off the record can hide.

Does it compare formatting or content?

+

Content. Font, spacing and style changes are ignored; wording, numbers, added and deleted sentences are what get highlighted. For contract review that is the signal, not the noise.

Can I compare a DOC (old format) file?

+

Save it as DOCX first (Word and LibreOffice both do this), or convert it to PDF with Word to PDF and use Compare PDF.

Can I compare a Word document with a PDF?

+

Convert the Word file to PDF with the free Word to PDF tool and compare the two PDFs – the diff engine is the same.

Is this suitable for contract redlines?

+

For seeing what actually changed between versions, yes – see the contract comparison guide for what to check clause by clause. The output is a review view rather than a merged redline document.
