How it works

1

Upload the PDF

Drop one PDF into the upload area. Files up to 100 MB are accepted.

2

Choose position and start

Pick bottom centre, bottom right, bottom left, top centre, top right or top left, then set the number the first page carries. The default is 1.

3

Download the numbered file

Every page is stamped in grey 11pt Helvetica about 10 mm from the edge, and the result downloads with -numbered added to the filename.

Numbers written into the page, not on top of it

A document that came out of several sources rarely arrives numbered. You merged three exports, you scanned a stack of paper, and now the reader has no way to say which sheet they are looking at. This tool walks the whole PDF once and stamps a number on every page: grey Helvetica, 11pt, roughly 10 mm from the edge you picked.

The number is drawn into the page content stream, so it behaves like the rest of the document. It prints, it survives flattening, and it does not disappear when someone strips comments or annotations. Sideways pages are handled too: the stamp follows the page rotation flag, which means a landscape scan gets its number along the edge that reads as the bottom rather than sliding into a margin.

Choosing the position and the first number

  • Six positions. Bottom centre, bottom right, bottom left, top centre, top right and top left.
  • Start at 1. The default, for a document that stands on its own.
  • Start at 0. Useful when the first sheet is a cover and should not count.
  • Start at any number. Set 5 or 40 to continue the numbering of a document that comes before this one.

Get the document in order first, then number it. Use Merge PDF to join the parts, Rotate PDF to straighten scans, and Crop PDF if wide margins are pushing the number away from the text.

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly is the number placed?

+

You choose one of six positions: bottom centre, bottom right, bottom left, top centre, top right or top left. The number sits about 10 mm from the page edge in grey Helvetica at 11pt, small enough to stay out of the way of your content.

Can I start the numbering at something other than 1?

+

Yes. Set the number the first page carries and every following page counts up by one. Enter 0 when the first sheet is a cover, or 5 to continue the numbering of another document.

What happens to landscape or sideways pages?

+

The number follows the rotation flag stored in the page, so a landscape scan gets its number along the edge the reader sees as the bottom. Mixed portrait and landscape documents come out consistent.

Will the numbers print, and do they survive flattening?

+

Yes. Each number is drawn into the page content rather than added as an annotation or a comment, so it prints, it stays after flattening, and it travels with the file into any other PDF tool.

Is it free, and how large can the file be?

+

The tool is free, needs no account and adds no watermark. One PDF per run, up to 100 MB. Processing happens on our own server with pdf-lib and the file is deleted right after the result is built.
